I love photographing people but sometimes I take portraits of people without them in the frame. That’s because their possessions and surroundings speak about who the people are.
Often when I go into friends’ homes, I wind up photographing details in their environment. It’s not unusual for me to spend hours in their bathrooms – with my tripod and camera – studying shapes, space and textures of the bathroom fixtures. I like how light molds the scene and suggests relationships.
For this image, I was staying in a home when I noticed these hats hanging on a peg. The husband and wife had come in from gardening and she had picked some flowers that were tied in a ribbon, hanging to dry. The muted colors and simplicity drew me in. I like the serenity and the human narrative it communicates.
